Simpson Softball Finishes Competitive Weekend 5-1

REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson Red Hawks softball team hosted six games this weekend all in non-conference play and proved that they deserve to be moving up in the NAIA rankings, with a 5-1 finish.

Simpson improves to 8-4 overall and now have knocked off No. 16 Corban University, No. 10 Oregon Tech, NCAA DII Concordia University, RV Eastern Oregon University, and top GSAC opponent William Jessup.

The Red Hawks, who began the year receiving votes in the NAIA National Poll, continued their mission to move up the ladder with another impressive weekend.

On days one and two, the Red Hawks beat Jessup and EOU twice beginning the weekend at 4-0.

Sophomore, Sydney Moorhead threw a complete game two-hitter in the 6-0 win against EOU in game one and got help from the 3-4-5 batters (Madison Wright, Mia Olvera, and Courtney Clevenger) combining for five hits, five RBIs, and three runs scored.

Game two was a little more of a battle for Simpson against William Jessup, but despite the Warriors knocking on the door to tie the game numerous times, the Red Hawks never trailed after the 2nd inning in the Danielle Kranz win. Mia Olvera, Gentry Hoffman, and Ashley Oakley each tallied two hits in Simpson's eight hit attack.

Simpson got right back at it on Sunday dominating against EOU in an 11-3 victory that only went five innings due to the eight run rule. Sunshine Wehunt picked up the win for the Red Hawks as the offense continued to stay hot with ten hits and 11 runs batted in, again with the heart of the order providing a significant amount of the damage.

In game four, the Red Hawks used a five-run third inning and another impressive outing from the reigning Cal Pac Pitcher of the Year, Sydney Moorhead, to record the 7-2 win.

On Tuesday, Simpson took on EOU twice more in a doubleheader where Simpson fell for the first time on the weekend 8-6, but rallied back to win game two 6-4.

Overall, the Red Hawks put together a spectacular weekend that made a statement on the West Coast. Simpson will head to Portland to compete in the Concordia University tournament to face Western Washington, Central Washington, Saint Martin's and Northwest University beginning on Feb. 22nd at 2 pm.
