Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Manjon's Game Winner Takes Simpson to 5-0

MERCED, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball keeps their winning streak and conference perfection rolling with a 62-61 come from behind victory against UC Merced.

Simpson had the ball down one with 22 seconds to go, when center, Jon Manjon, laid in a the go-ahead bucket while falling down with six seconds remaining. Merced's Ryan Haywood raced to other end, but his shot was rejected at the buzzer by JT Branch giving SU their fifth consecutive victory.

The Red Hawks continue to use their halfcourt defense as their stronghold, only allowing the Bobcats to shoot 39 percent for the game from the floor. Despite it being Simpson's third lowest scoring game of the year, the Red Hawks were able to grind out the one point victory in unbelievable fashion.

Simpson had four players in double figures led by Jalen Cooper with 13 points, six assists, and five rebounds. Blake Trent, Aaron Berry, and Jon Manjon combined for 33 points and SU also received nine points from an energized Brandon Moss, who provided key minutes in both halves.

The Red Hawks record their 11th win of the season, equaling last year's win total with still 11 guaranteed games left to be played in the campaign.

What could be Simpson's toughest test in conference play comes next Thursday, as the Red Hawks will face Antelope Valley, who sits in 2nd place in the Cal Pac standings at 4-1. SU will head to Lancaster, Calif. to take on the UAV Pioneers at 7:30 pm on January 17th.
