REDDING, Calif. - After a preseason that has been full of indoor practices due to smoke and limited time on the soccer field, the Simpson men's soccer team opened up its season with a dominating 4-0 win over Walla Walla University. The Red Hawks haven't won the first game of the year since 2008 when they beat Northwest Christian University in double overtime.
The Red Hawks come into the 2018 season with lots of promise. Head Coach,
Caleb Ikwuagwu, has brought in lots of talent to help solidify the returning squad members.
Simpson controlled possession throughout the 90 minute affair with a 26-4 shot advantage over the Wolves. The Red Hawks broke the tie when
Joseph Colmenero found the back of the net off a pass from
Bradley Manivong in the 31st minute. In one game, Colmenero has already equaled his goal total from last season.
SU quickly doubled the lead just five minutes later as
Taylor Sherman was able to get his shot by the goalkeeper this time off of a cross from
Joseph Colmenero.
The second half began much how the first ended, with Simpson putting the pressure on the Walla Walla defense.
Solomon Dutton tallied his first goal of the year in the 47th minute after a gorgeous through ball from
Ruben Barajas to set up the goal.
Lucas Dias added to the Simpson lead with the fourth goal in the 55th minute, which was the first goal of his career at Simpson U.
Red Hawk goalkeeper,
Gabe Coleman recorded the clean sheet, the first of his career, while also collecting two saves.
With momentum in the Red Hawks favor, Simpson will take on another Cascade Conference opponent, Northwest Christian University on August 28th at 4 pm.
