Simpson Rally Overtakes Nationally-ranked Jessup

Trailing 8-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning against the No. 7 team in the country, the Simpson baseball team put together five straight scoring innings, including the decisive two runs in the bottom of the eighth to cap a pivotal comeback and defeat William Jessup, 11-9, on Tuesday night at Tiger Field.

Austin Ruffner's go-ahead single in the eighth inning gave Simpson all the cushion it would need to complete the comeback over the Warriors. Mason Hegenbart worked two perfect innings in relief, including four strikeouts, to earn the victory on the mound.

William Jessup stormed to an 8-0 lead behind a seven-run top half of the fourth inning, which included a grand slam home run from Will Law.

The Red Hawks began their comeback in the bottom half of the fourth, the first of five straight bottom halves where the hosts would tally at least one run. Zachary Jones singled and advanced to third on a Ruffner double. A Rath Moseley single put SU on the board and a sac fly from Julian Holendor cut the Jessup lead to 8-2.

After WJU added a run in the fifth, the Red Hawks kept their rally alive with three more runs. Michael Carlos opened the frame with a single. Three straight doubles by Thomas Ahlstrom, Wilson Kessel, and Andrew Shaw plated three runs to head to the sixth down 9-5.

Three more Red Hawks crossed the plate in the sixth. Ahlstrom and Kessel each drove in a run with a base hit, and Shaw's squeeze bunt brought home another. Jessup now led, 9-8.

The top half of the seventh saw the Warriors load the bases with one out, but Vincent Cervantes, who worked 3.2 innings of relief to hold the Jessup offense at bay while the Red Hawks fought back on the offensive end, got back-to-back fly balls to centerfield to wiggle out of the jam.

The offense again responded. Daniel Hermosillo led off the inning with a walk and moved to third on Simpson groundouts before scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Hegenbart struck out the side in eighth to set up the winning runs for Simpson in the bottom half.

Back-to-back walks set up the inning for the Red Hawks. Ruffner's single brought home the go-ahead run, and Hermosillo's squeeze bunt plated an insurance run.

The Red Hawks pounded out 14 hits on the night with Kessel collecting three of them (3-4). Ahlstrom, Jones, Ruffner, and Carlos each has a pair of hits.

Simpson returns to Cal Pac action at home Friday facing Providence Christian. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
