VALLEJO, Calif. - After being down by as much as 11 points in the first half, the Red Hawks rallied to a 61-45 win over Cal Maritime in the Cal Pac Opener.
Simpson's strong defensive effort kept the score low, which then allowed the Red Hawk offense, who only scored 20 points in the first half, to then explode for 41 second half points and pull off the 16 point win.
The Red Hawks began the game by struggling to handle the basketball, with numerous first quarter turnovers that led to easy Keelhauler buckets. Simpson stuck to its gameplan in the second quarter, by slowing the game down and began finding its way back into the game. The 25 point fourth quarter by the Red Hawks was the dagger that put the Keelhaulers at bay.
Nine of the 11 players that saw the floor for Simpson scored led by
Alli Ramelli with 14 points while drilling four 3-pointers in the process.
Madison Cox was two rebounds shy of a double-double with 12 points and eight boards. The Red Hawks bench was key in the victory as
Whitney Armstrong and
Lexi Thompson both played crucial roles in clutch moments down the stretch.
With the win, SU gets back to .500 at 6-6 and begins Cal Pac Conference play at 1-0. Simpson continues its road trip to take on Westcliff University on December 15th at 5:30 pm.
