REDDING, Calif - The Red Hawks took their home court on Tuesday night looking to avenge an early non-conference loss to the Hustlin' Owls. Simpson chalked the loss earlier this season up to a slow start as they struggled to score in Klamath Falls and only registered one field goal in the opening quarter. This time around the Red Hawks scored the ball early but fell victim to poor fast break defense in the first quarter and OIT took an early lead. At the end of the first quarter Simpson trailed 22-11.
The Red Hawks improved defensively in the second quarter, but still struggled to stop Oregon Tech. At one point Simpson cut into the deficit, but still found themselves trailing by 10 at the half, 34-24.
Simpson was able to string together a couple runs in the third quarter runs, but the Husltin' Owls offense still found easy baskets. It seemed like things were starting to go the Red Hawks way with a run late in the third quarter. Lexi Thompson and Precious Jackson hit back to back jump shots to swing some momentum the Red Hawks way, but Oregon Tech countered with a corresponding bucket.
At the start of the fourth, the Red Hawks found themselves down by 12 . Whitney Armstrong started the quarter strong for the Red Hawks by getting to the cup for an easy two. An easy Madison Cox bucket followed by two Alli Ramelli free throws forced the Owls to call a timeout. After the timeout a charge taken by Whitney Armstrong got the crowd in the Grant Center right back into the game as Simpson cut the defect to eight. Ultimately the Red Hawks were unable to complete the comeback, falling 67-57.
Estella Gutierrez had a career night with a season-high of 20 points also adding two rebounds and two assists.
Simpson will begin Cal Pac conference play Saturday, December 8th on the road in Vallejo, Calif. battling with Cal Maritime.
