Red Hawks Sweep at Maritime Tourney Slipping Past Menlo

VALLEJO, Calif. -- For the second straight night, Simpson battled to a hard-fought win over a tough non-conference opponent at the Markie Cosca Memorial Tournament on the campus of Cal State Maritime. Saturday, the Red Hawks knocked off previously unbeaten Menlo, 71-69, and left the tournament as the only undefeated of the four teams in the two-day classic.

Aron Rudd led three Red Hawks in double figures with 16 as Simpson tallied another comeback victory in the second half. His three-pointer with just under five minutes to play capped a 14-2 Simpson run that turned a 53-47 deficit into a 61-55 lead that the Red Hawks would not relinquish. Josh Brakkee, scored 15 points, and Anthony Spencer added 13, including 9-10 from the free throw line.

Simpson led by as many as eight with 1:12 to play and then held off a furious rally by the Oaks. Menlo had the ball on the last possession, but Simpson's defense did not allow a shot attempt to record the victory in similar fashion to Friday's 73-71 win over Northwest University.

The Red Hawks dominated the glass. Simpson's 42-28 advantage on the boards helped overcome a 17-turnover night. Jalen DuPree grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Rudd added eight.

John Paine paced Menlo, who fell to 5-1 on the season, with 18 points.

The Red Hawks return home Monday night to face arch rival, William Jessup at the Grant Center. Tip is set for 7:00 p.m.
