Red Hawks earn first win over OIT

REDDING, Calif.- The Red Hawks earned their first win of the season on Monday night when they split a double header against the visiting Owls from Oregon Tech. After the Owls offense exploded in the first game, 17-9, the Red Hawks led by Cody Coggins on the mound would quite the bats in the second game to win, 4-1.

Game one saw the Owls getting to the Red Hawk starter Humberto Solorio early as they were on the board early scoring twice in the opening frame. Solorio would settle down and get a one-two-three inning in the second inning.

In the third inning the the Owls get chase Solorio from the game as the scored eight times on seven hits in the inning to make it 10-0 after three innings of play.

The Red Hawks would show some signs of life in the fourth inning as they would cut the Owl lead in half scoring five times. George Cecchetti would get things started in the inning scoring Matthew Kiyota and Jarrett Kirby on his two out triple, Ceccetti would then score on a errorr from the Owls second baseman and Blaine Hokama would add two RBI's of his own scoring Coryn Iwamasa and Kyle Ferguson with a double to end the scoring in the inning.

After the Owls added one in two more in the top of the fifth inning the Red Hawks would get one back in the sixth inning on a Ferguson RBI single scoring Iwamasa to make the score 12-6.

The Owls would continue to be impressive at the dish scoring two more in the top of the eighth inning. The Red Hawks would equal those two runs with a Rath Mosley 2 RBI single scoring Ferguson and Hokama.

The Owls would finish the game off strong adding three more in the ninth inning. Again the Red Hawks wouldn't go quietly scoring once in the bottom half of the frame. This time on a bases loaded walk drawn by Ferguson. That would be all the Red Hawks could come up with in the inning falling 17-9.

Solorio gets the loss allowing 8 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Ferguson was the bright spot offensively going 3-4 from the plate with 2 RBI and scoring 2 runs with a walk. Hokama also added 3 hits of his own with 2 RBI.

In game two Red Hawk starter Cody Coggins was looking to keep his team in it early and he did just that striking out the side in the top of the first inning. The Red Hawks would take the lead in their half of the frame when Dylan Mumford hit a two run homer to score Kenneth Sellers.

Coggins added three more K's over the next two innings also holding the Owls scorless as the Red Hawk offense would add another when Mumford was at it again this time a shallow single scoring Sellers to make it 3-0 Red Hawks.

Coggins continued to be sharp putting up zero after zero through the seventh inning. The Red Hawks would make it 4-0 in the bottom of the 7th as Ferguson scored on an Aaron Curfman single.

The Owls would finally get themselves on the scoreboard in the 8th when they got to Red Hawk relief pitcher Garrett Yoder for one run. The Owls could score again as Ryan King came in to slam the door to earn the save and securing that ever elusive win for the Red Hawks, 4-1.

Coggins earn the win for the Red Hawks pitching 7 scoreless innings allowing just 3 hits and no walks while striking out 12 batters.

Dylan Mumford was the start offensively responsible for three of the Red Hawk's four going 2-4 at the plate. Ferguson added two more hits in game two with a run scored.

The Red Hawks will now hit the road for an eight game road trip to Oregon and Idaho looking to build on the win. The trip will begin with a double header vs. Corban University on Friday, March 11th with first pitch scheduled at 12pm.
