Volleyball Wins in SoCal, Struggles in Arizona

MESA, Ariz. - The Simpson University women's volleyball team traveled to Southern California and Arizona for their California Pacific opening weekend. The Red Hawks defeated La Sierra University in four sets and lost to Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) in four sets and Benedictine University in Mesa in three sets.

The Red Hawks opened their three-game road trip in Riverside, Calif., against the Golden Eagles of La Sierra. Simpson lost the first match 27-25 but responded with three straight wins (25-18,26-24, 25-21). Senior Chelsea White led all players with 31 digs. Sophomore Ashley Cervantes followed with 22 digs and 17 assists. On day two, the Red Hawks traveled to Prescott, Ariz., to face Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The first two matches were nail bitters, and the Eagles narrowly won both sets (25-23, 25-22). The Red Hawks won set three (25-19) but dropped set four (25-17). Senior Jazmin Wallace led the Red Hawks with 20 digs, Cervantes followed with 13 digs and 24 assists.

On the final day of the trip, the Red Hawks faced future Cal Pac member Benedictine University in Mesa, Ariz. Benedictine dominated sets one and two (25-15,25-19). Simpson battled in set three but couldn't pull off the victory, losing 25-22. Cervantes led all players with 19 digs and 14 assists.

Simpson returns to action at home against University of Antelope Valley on Oct. 9. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
