Nationally-Ranked SOU Knocks Off Red Hawks in Season Opener

ASHLAND, Ore. - No. 16 Southern Oregon defeated Simpson, 104-82, in the season opener for both teams Thursday night at Riehm Arena. The Red Hawks had three players in double-figures, Esther Wofford, Kelsie Jurin, and Whitney Rodriguezall scoring 19 points, but SU could not overcome a 15-point first quarter deficit to the nationally-ranked Raiders.

SOU, which finished last season in the sweet 16 round of the NAIA National Tournament and with a 27-5 record, stormed to an early 24-9 edge on its home floor, where the Raiders recorded a 14-1 record last season.

Simpson, however, fought back in the second quarter. After trailing by as many as 25, the Red Hawks put together a 22-7 run over a six-minute stretch near the end of the first half to cut the lead to 10 at 43-33. The Raiders responded with a 5-0 run to finish the final :34 of the half and took a 48-33 lead into the locker room. The teams played the remaining two quarters fairly even with SOU topping SU in the third, 30-23, and each team tallying 26 points in the fourth to reach the final score, 104-82.

Imani Joseph narrowly missed her first career double-double in a Red Hawk uniform. She finished with eight points and 11 rebounds. Wofford grabbed eight rebounds.

The 19 points for Jurin and Rodriguez are career highs as this game served as their Simpson debuts. Jurin is a freshman from Redding's U-Prep, and Rodriguez is a transfer from Eastern Oregon. Jurin led the team with six assists on the night as well. Rodriguez caromed six boards before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

Courtney Setzer led the Raiders with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Simpson plays next at Corban on Friday, Nov. 6. Tip is set for 3:00 p.m. in Salem, Ore.
