Volleyball Splits in Cal Pac Home Matches

Simpson University volleyball team split this weekend in their Cal Pac conference home opener to University of Antelope Valley and UC Merced. The Red Hawks defeated the Pioneers of University of Antelope Valley in four sets and lost to the UC Merced Bobcats in four sets.

The Red Hawks took on the Pioneers on Friday, Oct. 9 in what looked like a quick and easy sweep. As the Red Hawks won the first two sets (25-16, 25-22). After the ten minute intercession, the Pioneers came out on all cylinders winning the third set 25-20. 

In the fourth and final set, the Red Hawks showed their dominance by getting out to a 22-9 lead. Antelope Valley would try and crawl back into the set outscoring the Red Hawks eight to two, but the Pioneers would seal the victory for the Red Hawks on a serving error. 

Senior Jazmine Wallace led all Red Hawks with fourteen digs and junior Madison Rinehart followed with ten digs. Sophomore Ashley Cervantes had nineteen assist and junior Kelsey Reibsamen recorded sixteen assist.

On Saturday, Oct. 10, the Red Hawks took on Cal Pac power UC Merced. The Bobcats enter the game with an 8-4 overall and 1-0 Cal Pac record. The Bobcats won the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19. The Red Hawks would bounce back in the third set winning 25-21. In the fourth and final set UC Merced squeaked by Simpson 25-23. 

Cervantes led the Red Hawks with eighteen digs and sixteen assist. Reibsamen followed with ten digs and ten assist, Wallace had seventeen digs and junior Cassandra Simons contributed with twelve digs.

The loss puts the Red Hawks at 9-9 overall and 2-2 in Cal Pac play. 

The Red Hawks will return to action on Oct. 17 at Mills College in Oakland, CA. Match is set to start at 2pm.
