ANGWIN, Calif. - The women's volleyball team continues to roll as they kicked off league play tonight with a straight set win over Pacific Union College, 25-15, 25-20, and 25-23.
The Red Hawks started fast as they jumped out to the early 14-4 lead on a pair of 5-0 runs and a 4-0 run. The Pioneers pulled within four, but the Red Hawks closed out the first set victory on a 9-3 run as
Kimora McKechnie posted back-to-back kills to end the set.
Tied at 18 in the second set, the Red Hawks took the late lead on a 5-3 run as
Tiara Manns and
Louise Oliveira each posted a kill. The Red Hawks finished strong as they outscored the Pioneers 4-1 as
Maggie Warden owned the final kill of the second set.
A thrilling third set set up an exciting finish as the Red Hawks held the 23-18 lead before the Pioneers rallied to pull within one as they scored four unanswered points. Simpson held off the late rally as McKechnie slammed down the final kill of the night to preserve the straight-set victory.
Louise Oliveria posted a team-high nine kills while
Maggie Warden followed close behind with eight kills.
Brooke Sarahina anchored the setter spot as he notched a team-high 20 assists and four aces.
Brooklyn Jimenez led the defense with 15 digs, while
Alexia Andaya registered 11 digs.
Kimora McKechnie had a solid game up front as she tallied seven kills to go along with a team-high four total blocks.
With the win, Simpson pushes its win streak to five games as they begin conference play in the win column. They look to keep rolling as they host Pacific Union this Sunday at 4:30 pm at the James M. Grant Center.
