REDDING, Calif. - The men's soccer team nearly earned its first win of the 2026 season as they held the 1-0 lead over the Beacons for the first 80 minutes.
The Red Hawks drew first blood in the 23rd minute on a goal by
David Guerrero. The 1-0 lead would remain until the final 10 minutes.
The Beacons scored the equalizer off the foot of Brady Housley in the 82nd minute on an overpass from Emmanuel Rea.
Bushnell kept the momentum rolling as they scored one minute later on a second effort goal by Jay Jay Van Der Velde for the game-winner.
The story of the game belonged to the late goals. But the Red Hawks had a couple of instances where they missed opportunities to add insurance goals with one-on-one matchups with the goalkeeper.
Aaron Lowry prevailed as he remained spotless after the early first-half goal. He notched three saves, but none more important than in the 56th minute, where he denied a shot off the foot from
Jevic Mwanza to keep the game within reach.
His counterpart, Julina Mejia, took his first loss of the season as he tallied eight saves as he remained under heavy fire for much of the game as the Red Hawks were outshot 18-6.
Simpson looks to bounce back as they take on Lincoln University on Thursday at 11 am at the California Soccer Park.
