Simpson edges PUC in four sets on the road

ANGWIN, Calif. - The men's volleyball team defeated Pacific Union College tonight in four sets on the road in Angwin, CA. 

The Red Hawks faced a 19-17 deficit as they went on a game-changing 8-3 run to take the first set 25-21. Akira Davies led the rally with two kills, Dehryn Brown, Afatia Thompson Jr., and Diego Chavez each posted a kill while Ethan Rodriguez notched an ace. 

The Pioneers answered back in the second set to even the match score with a 25-17 victory. A kill by Brown pulled the Red Hawks within two, 14-12. But the Pioneers outscored Simpson 7-3 to take the 21-15 lead and then scored the final three points to take the second set. 

Back-to-back kills by Brown helped Simpson extend its lead to five points in the third set, 22-17. But the Pioneers rallied as they pulled within one on a 5-1 run. Simpson prevailed as they closed out the 25-22 victory on two straight points as Brown owned the final kill in the third set. 

With the score tied at 18 in the fourth set, the Red Hawks scored four unanswered points to take the 22-18 lead as back-to-back kills by Chavez and Brown started the rally. 

The Pioneers did not go quietly as they scored five straight points to take the 24-23 lead as they moved into set point territory. A kill by Brown evened the score as a duo block by Jacob Shelton and Afatia Thompson Jr. moved the Red Hawks into match point territory. The final swing of the night came from Thompson Jr. to close out the 26-24 fourth set victory to take the match in four sets. 

Dehryn Brown had a monster game as he posted 27 kills to go along with a stellar .396 hitting percentage. Davies posted 10 kills to go along with six digs. 

Tyce Nakamura anchored the setter spot as he notched 33 assists, one block, one kill, and seven digs. 

The Red Hawks are back in action this week Wednesday, as they take on Central Christian College at 9 am.
