REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks concluded play in the Cal Pac Jamboree today with a win over Walla Walla University in four sets.
Simpson held total control in the first set as they won convincingly 25-16, as they jumped out to the early 3-0 lead on a kill by
Luke Konjoyan and an ace by
Akira Davies.
Holding onto a three point lead, the Red Hawks outscored the Wolves 9-3 to close out the first set victory as they scored the final four points on three Walla Walla miscues and a kill by Konjoyan to close out the first set victory.
Simpson continued to roll as they jumped out to the commanding 13-2 lead in the second set as Konjoyan posted three kills, with
Chase Silveira following close behind with two kills.
The Red Hawks took the second set in dominant fashion, 25-12, to take the 2-0 match lead.
Walla Walla did not go quietly as they held the 17-7 lead. Simpson pulled to as close as six points before the Wolves took the third set 25-16 to force a fourth set.
Simpson held onto the early 5-7 lead in the fourth set before they went on a crucial 7-1 run to take the commanding 14-6 lead while Davies paced the Red Hawks with three kills.
The final three Simpson points came on kills by
Jacob Shelton, Davies to move the Red Hawks into match point territory, and
Ethan Rodriguez to close out the four-set victory.
Davies and Konjoyan led the Red Hawks with 12 kills each, while
Afatia Thompson Jr. and Rodriguez combined for 21 digs.
Simpson is back in action this Monday as they head to SoCal to take on former Cal Pac rival La Sierra at 7 pm.
