VALLEJO, Calif. - The men's basketball team earned the regular season title for the first time in program history last night as they took down Cal Maritime in overtime to earn the #1 seed in the upcoming Cal Pac tournament.
The Keelhaulers and Red Hawks mirrored each other in regulation as they went into the half tied at 32.
Timothy Parker led the Red Hawks with eight points and four rebounds in the first half while
Nian Allen and
Michael Wood each posted six points.
Cal Maritime went up by as much as 13 points with just over seven minutes left in the second half before the Red Hawks stormed back to tie the game with 26 seconds on the clock.
Parker anchored the comeback with nine points, including the game tying layup with 26 seconds while
Aidan Rolfs drilled two key three-pointers to force overtime.
The Keelahulers struck first with a three-pointer from Justiz Wilson to begin the overtime period before Simpson's
Jack Jillson responded with a long ball from beyond the arc.
A key 6-0 run by Simpson helped create enough separation as
Saben Attebery and
Nian Allen posted layups, with Parker putting down a huge dunk.
The Red Hawks prevailed as they held onto the 93-87 victory to take the league title and earn the #1 seed.
Parker had a huge night as he posted a team-high 30 points while shooting 10-13 from the floor.
Allen and Jillson combined for 35 points and nine rebounds while Rolfs posted a double-double with 11 rebounds and 11 points.
With the win, Simpson earned the league title and the #1 seed in the upcoming Cal Pac tournament, as they have the first round bye and await the winner from the Westcliff and Stanton game. Simpson plays next on Sunday, March 1st at 2:30 pm.
