REDDING, Calif. - The men's soccer team dropped its conference home opener tonight as they narrowly fell to Westcliff 2-1.
The Warriors jumped on the board first in the 17th minute as Dan-Lewis Bamana found the back of the net as he eluded Simpson's goalie.
The Red Hawks answered in the 29th minute as
Silvestre Quintero combined with
Jonathen Garcia Virgen to tie the game. Quintero's goal marked his team-leading sixth goal of the year, while Virgen made an immediate impact in his first game back from the injured list.
The Warriors scored the would-be game-winner in the 60th minute as El Hadj Hamzaoui cleaned up a loose ball off a save from Simpson's goalie,
Julian Mejia.
The Warriors' offense kept the pressure on the Red Hawks' defense for much of the second half as they outshot Simpson 16-2 to preserve the 2-1 victory.
Mejia suffered the loss in between the posts as he tallied seven saves. His counterpart, Olly Scott, earned the win as he posted four saves.
Simpson looks to bounce back as they take on Stanton at 12:30 pm on Sunday at the California Soccer Park.
