Red Hawks punch playoff ticket with shutout victory over the Pioneers

REDDING, Calif. - The men's soccer team punched its ticket to the upcoming Cal Pac Tournament with a 3-0 victory over the Pioneers.

The Red Hawks got on the board first in the 21st minute as the Pioneers experienced some friendly fire, deflecting a pass across the middle into their own goal.

Leon Hoang added an insurance goal in the 64th minute with the help of Jonathan Garcia Virgen. Minutes later, the Red Hawks extended their lead with an exclamation goal in the 66th minute; the Pioneers' goalie made a tremendous save off a shot from Garcia Virgen, but Silvestre Quintero came flying in to clean up the deflection for a goal.

The Red Hawks kept the pressure on the Pioneers, firing off 20 shots with 11 on goal. Garcia Virgen helped anchor the Simpson strikers as he tallied a pair of assists.

The lone red card of the game came in the 59th minute as tempers flared and PUC's Franklin Antwi was removed from the contest.

Julian Mejia and Jesus Montoya combined to earn the clean sheet between the posts, totaling two saves, while Mejia picked up the win.

With the victory, Simpson cemented its spot in the upcoming Cal Pac Conference Tournament as the #4 seed. The Red Hawks will take on either Westcliff or Stanton, depending on the outcome of this week's finale.
