VALLEJO, Calif. - The men's basketball squad began the second round of conference play on a high note tonight as they took down California Maritime Academy 75-64.
The first points for Simpson belonged to Senior forward,
Derek Gorden, as he nailed a mid-range jump shot.
Followed by back-to-back layups by
Jace Mills to give Simpson the early 6-2 lead.
With the score tied at nine, the Red Hawks went on a 14-0 run to take the commanding 23-9 lead.
The rally started with a couple of free throws by
DaMari Tate as
Drey Ubas,
Timothy Parker, And
Trey Conrad picked up buckets.
Tate and Conrad each notched five points as they both nailed three-pointers.
Simpson compiled its largest lead of the first half with just over seven minutes left as
Jack Jillson hit a three-pointer to extend Simpson's lead to 31-11.
Parker closed out the first half with a layup as time expired to give Simpson the 39-23 lead going into the half.
Simpson opened the second half on an 8-2 run to build its lead to 22 points on a layup by Parker.
The Red Hawks kept the pedal to the metal as they built its largest lead of the night to 23 points with just over eight minutes left in the second half as Conrad sunk two free throws.
The Keelhaulers could not overcome the deficit as the Red Hawks closed out the 75-64 victory to begin the second round of conference play.
Tate had a big night as he posted a team-high 16 points to go along with three rebounds.
Osumanu Nuhu had a big night off the bench as he posted a team-high 16 points to go along with three rebounds as he shot 7-9 from the floor.
Parker and Conrad also had solid games as they each picked up 10 points and five rebounds.
With the win, Simpson has now won two straight conference games as they move into the fourth spot as they are 1.5 GB, La Sierra.
