MCMINNVILLE, Ore. - The women's basketball squad began its Oregon road trip tonight as they took on DIII opponent Linfield University.
The first points of the night belonged to a mid-range jumper by
Cerina Nguyen, followed by a steal and fastbreak layup by
Destiny Nichols.
However, the Wildcats came roaring back and responded as they played a dominant first quarter by outscoring Simpson 26-7 for the rest of the quarter.
A jump shot by Nguyen to begin the second quarter got Simpson back in the scoring column before the Wildcats reeled off nine straight points to take the commanding 35-13 lead.
But the Red Hawks could not make up ground in the second quarter as the Wildcats doubled up the Red Hawks 14-7 to take the 40-18 lead into the half.
The combination of Nguyen and Nichols to begin the second half pulled Simpson back within 18 points.
But not before the Wildcats exploded for 13 straight points while capping off another strong quarter of play to push their lead to 37 points heading into the fourth quarter.
The Red Hawks closed out the game with some quality buckets as
Moriah Bowles,
Anna Marshall, and Nichols added three-pointers to conclude the 68-39 road loss.
Nicholas led the Red Hawks' offensive attack with 13 points, while Nguyen led the defense with 12 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Simpson looks to bounce back tomorrow as they continue their Oregon road trip against Warner Pacific at 3 pm.
