ANGWIN, Calif. - The women's volleyball team continues to stay scorching hot as they took down Pacific Union College tonight in straight sets to extend their win streak to nine games.
The Pioneers jumped out to the early 9-3 lead to begin the game before the Red Hawks tied the game at 11 on an ace by
Abigail Shackelford.
Soon after, the Red Hawks gained their first lead of the night on three straight points on a kill by
Kare Ann Oshiro, a block by
Kiersti Howell, and an ace by
Brooke Sarahina.
From there on out, Simpson never lost the lead as they held onto the 25-21 first set victory as
Mariah Napoleon picked up the set-clinching kill.
A block by
Tiara Manns and Shackelford got Simpson on the board in set two as they grabbed the early 8-5 lead before the Pioneers scored four unanswered points to take the one-point lead.
Facing an 18-17 deficit, the Red Hawks scored four straight points to take the 21-18 lead as Manns and Howell posted kills.
The Red Hawks went on to close out the second set victory with three straight points to take the commanding 2-0 match lead.
The Pioneers looked to push for a fourth set as they held the 18-14 lead in the third set. But the Red Hawks had other plans as they rallied back by scoring four straight points to tie the game as Manns notched two kills.
However, the Pioneers battled as they held the 21-19 lead before the Red Hawks exploded for five unanswered points to move into match point territory.
Napoleon anchored the comeback as she notched three kills before closing out the match with the game-clinching kill to give Simpson the 25-22 victory.
With the win, Simpson continues to roll as they have won nine straight games to remain perfect in conference play, and hold the top spot in the Continental Athletic Conference.
Napoleon posted a team-high 15 kills while Manns picked up 11 kills and one block.
At the setter spot, Sarahina led the team with 24 assists while
Mackenzie Tataryn notched 13 assists and two aces.
Brooklyn Jiminez led the defense with 10 digs as
Emilly Melo followed close behind with nine.
Simpson continues play as they take on Westcliff tomorrow at noon.
