REDDING, Calif. - The women's volleyball squad wrapped up its regular season today as they dropped its first conference game to the Warriors in straight sets.
The Red Hawks got off to a strong start as they jumped out to a 4-1 lead on kills by
Michelle Sams and
Elizabeth Heath.
However, the Warriors went on a crucial 9-1 run to take the commanding 16-9 lead as they took the first set 25-17.
An ace by
Mackenzie Tataryn got Simpson on the board in the second set as Simpson jumped out to the 13-7 lead on four straight points on two aces by
Mackenzie Tataryn and kills by
Kare Ann Oshiro and Sams.
But the Warriors rallied back as they tied the game at 19 before taking the one-point advantage on a kill by Oshiro.
The Warriors answered back as they ended the third set on a 6-2 run to take the 2-0 match lead.
Westcliff held the momentum as they grabbed the 13-10 lead before Simpson scored four unanswered points to take the 14-13 lead on two kills by Heath and an ace and a kill by
Abigail Shackelford.
Simpson's last push came late in the third set as they reeled off three straight points to pull within two, 22-20.
But the Warriors completed the straight set victory to give Simpson its lone blemish in conference play.
Heath led the Red Hawks with 13 kills and 10 digs, while Oshiro followed close behind with nine kills
Tataryn and Shackelford combined for 29 assists and five aces at the setter position.
With the loss, Simpson concludes the regular season going 14-15 and 9-1 in conference play as they earned their first-ever Cal Pac season title, as they prepare for the Continental Athletic Conference tournament Nov. 14-15th in Lawrence, KS.
