VALLEJO, Calif. - The women's basketball squad earned a season-opening victory against Cal Maritime last night on the road in Vallejo, CA.
The first points of the young season came from junior transfer Destiny Nichols on a fast break layup.
Simpson continued to roll as they opened the game with nine straight points as
Andrea Perez picked up her first points as a Red Hawk, while last year's All-Conference selections,
Cerina Nguyen and
Anna Marshall, posted their first buckets in their senior campaigns.
The Red Hawks held the commanding 28-7 lead at the end of the first quarter as junior
Lupe Lemus finished a three-point play following a jumper that drew a foul.
Marshall extended Simpson's largest lead of the first half to 27 points at the end of the second quarter as she created a huge turnover to finish it with a fast break layup.
The Keelhaulers earned the final points of the first half, but Simpson held the commanding 51-26 lead.
A layup by Lemus began the second half scoring for the Red Hawks, followed by back-to-back buckets by Marshall to make it a 57-30 Red Hawks lead.
Simpson grew its largest lead of the game to 30 points as Bowles posted back-to-back buckets, followed by a three-pointer by
Te'Niyah Lindsey.
Protecting a 21-point lead, Lindsey and Marshall anchored the fourth quarter with a combined 10 points to secure the 85-71 victory.
Marshall led the team with 25 points and five steals while Nguyen and Bowles combined for 35 points to round out the double-digit scorers.
Simpson looks to hit the road on Monday to take on DII opponent Cal Poly Humboldt at 5:30 pm at the Lumberjack Arena.
