PASADENA, Calif. - The women's volleyball squad kicked off its SoCal road trip tonight as they took on Life Pacific College.
The Red Hawks looked for the season sweep against the Warriors as they first met earlier in the season at the Hope International Tournament where Simpson won in straight sets.
The Warriors drew first blood in the first set before a Warriors attacking error followed by a kill by
Katie Graham gave Simpson its first lead of the night.
The Red Hawks and Warriors went back and forth before a kill by Graham tied the game at 12.
After a Warrior point, Simpson scored five unanswered points to take the 17-13 lead. Mariah Napolean recorded a kill and a block assist with
Dani Rydjord.
The Warriors pulled within one point late in the first set before three straight Red Hawk points extended SU's lead to 23-19 on back-to-back aces by
Kare Ann Oshiro.
But Life Pacific put together a late surge as they pulled within one point on three straight points that forced a Red Hawks timeout by Coach Mike Haworth.
But Napoleon closed out the first set in dominant fashion as she slammed down back-to-back kills to take the first set victory 25-22.
The Warriors jumped out to a 5-1 lead before the Red Hawks scored five unanswered points which included an ace by Oshiro and a kill by Napoleon to grab the early 6-5 lead.
Simpson held a slim 15-13 advantage after a kill by Oshiro but the Warriors turned the momentum.
Life Pacific went on a 9-3 run to take the 22-18 lead. Simpson could not mount a comeback and drooped the second set 25-20 to even the match score.
The Red Hawks grabbed the early 7-5 lead in the third set after a kill by
Mallory Swenson. However, the Warriors went on a 13-2 run to take the 19-9 lead.
With the Warriors in set-point territory, the Red Hawks came storming back as they scored seven straight points to pull within two, 24-22.
Kiaha Granger notched one kill and Napoleon recorded two kills as Abigail Shackleford capped off the 7-0 run with an ace.
But the Warriors prevailed and held off the Red Hawks late rally as they took set three 25-22.
The Warriors kept the momentum rolling in the fourth set as it was all Life Pacific. They convincingly took the set four 25-8.
Mariah Napoleon had a team-high 13 kills to go along with 10 digs and one total block.
Abigail Shackelford and Tataryn Mackenzie anchored the setter spot as they combined for 27 assists, one ace, and 10 digs.
Kare Ann Oshiro led the team with 12 digs on the night while notching five kills and one solo block.
Simpson looks to bounce back tomorrow as they take on Cal Tech at 11 am and Hope International at 1 pm.
