Simpson Drops Season Opener to OIT

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. - The Red Hawks men's soccer team kicked off its 2024 season today in Klamath Falls, OR as they took on Oregon Tech.

The Owls took the first shot of the game in the eighth minute on a kick that just missed wide left out of the diving reach of goalkeeper Jesus Montoya

The first shot of the 2024 season belonged to Dylan Sides in the 21st minute as he tried a header from a pass by Gilberto Ceja that missed wide to the left.

The Owls drew first blood in the 24th minute on a strike that beat the diving keeper Montoya to his left.

But the Owls kept on the gas as they scored just a few minutes later on a second-chance kick that reflected off the post.

The Red Hawks answered back in the 29th minute off a throw-in that found the far right side of the net on a strike by Anthony Mora

However, the Owls picked up a late insurance goal in the final minute before the half on a perfectly placed shot that found the top right of the net.

Facing a 3-1 deficit, Simpson's first shot of the second half came off the leg from Anthony Hernandez in the 46th minute. But a diving OIT keeper kept the score 3-1.

The Red Hawks threatened again in the 84th minute on a free kick by Michel Hampe. But another great diving save by the OIT preserved the 3-1 lead.

OIT nailed its final goal of the day in the 88th minute on a one-on-one matchup with Montoya as an Owl attacker split two Red Hawk defenders.

Michel Hampe picked up his first goal of the year in the 89th minute on a penalty kick to cut the OIT lead in half.

But the deficit proved too much for Simpson as OIT secured the 4-2 victory.

Jesus Montoya notched two saves in the post but picked up his first loss of the year.

Michel Hampe and Anthony Mora each picked up their first goals of the season as they combined for five shots.

Simpson looks to bounce back as they have a scrimmage on Friday against College of the Redwoods before heading north to take on D2 opponent Cal Poly Humboldt State on Saturday at 2 pm.
