FULLERTON, Calif. - THe Red Hawks continued play this morning as they took on Arizona Christian.
The Red Hawks got on the board first on a Firestorm error followed by an ace by
Mackenzie Tataryn to grab the early lead.
However, ACU grabbed the lead on three straight points and never looked back as they never surrendered the lead in the first set.
The Firestorm grabbed the commanding 20-11 lead late in the first set before a late Red Hawks rally made things interesting on an 8-2 run.
Two kills by
Mariah Napoleon, a kill by
Dani Rydjord, and three straight aces by
Katie Graham highlighted the key comeback attempt that pulled Simpson within three points before an ACU timeout.
A kill by
Tiara Manns capped off Simpson's comeback attempt as the Firestorm closed out set one 25-20.
But the Red Hawks came out firing in set two as they grabbed the commanding 8-1 lead on an ace by
Mackenzie Tataryn and kills by
Kare Ann Oshiro and
Katie Graham.
ACU fought back as they went on a 12-2 run to take the 13-10 lead and never looked back as they went on to outscore Simpson 12-5 to take set two 25-15.
With its backs against the wall, the Red Hawks refused to go down quietly.
An ace by
Madison Kammuller kicked off the third set which saw seven lead changes.
Simpson retook the lead for good as they reeled off five straight points on a kill by Graham and an ace by
Abigail Shackelford.
Mariah Napoleon had three crucial kills late in the third set to give Simpson the 20-13 lead.
A kill by
Tiara Manns gave Simpson the set-point advantage followed by a tandem set-ending block by
Mallory Swenson and
Kiahla Granger.
Granger began the fourth set with a kill to give Simpson the early lead before four straight points by the Firestorm forced a timeout.
Simpson followed the Firestorm close all set as they pulled within one point late in the fourth set with kills by Napoleon and Rydjord.
A huge kill by Swenson pulled Simpson within one before a bad ACU set tied the game at 22.
But the Firestorm closed out the game with three straight points on Red Hawks miscues to take the match victory, 3-1.
Katie Graham had a big game as she had a team-high nine kills to go along with nine digs. Graham had a key position switch in the third set as Coach Haworth moved her outside.
Dani Rydjord and
Mariah Napoleon had big games up front as they combined for 10 total blocks and 11 kills.
Mackenzie Tataryn and
Abigail Shackelford had another solid performance as they combined for 25 assists, 16 digs and four aces.
Madison Kammuller had a team-high 16 digs to go along with two aces.
The Red Hawks looked to finish the Summer Slam Invite strong against Life Pacific College in a highly contested game.
Simpson got on the board on a tip-in kill by
Katie Graham which qued four straight points thanks to back-to-back aces by
Mackenzie Tataryn.
The Red Hawks never relinquished the lead from that point on in a back-and-forth set.
A kill by Mallory Swernosn ended the first set thriller 25-22 as SU grabbed the 1-0 match lead.
Mallor Swenson and
Katie Graham had a terrific first set as they both notched four kills each.
Simpson kept the momentum rolling as they scored the first four points of the second set on two kills by
Kare Ann Oshiro and a block by
Mariah Napoleon and
Katie Graham.
Set two continued as a closely knitted game as both teams exchanged rallies back and forth.
With the game tied 15-all, the Red Hawks created separation as they went on a 6-1 run to take the 21-16 lead.
Abigail Shackelford and
Tiara Manns paid major contributions as they combined for three kills and one ace.
Mariah Napoleon had the final swing of the second set that gave Simpson the 2-0 match lead as they took set two 25-22.
Simpson looked to secure the straight-set victory as back-to-back aces by
Madison Kammuller to open the third set gave Simpson the early lead.
The Red Hawks justified a commanding 18-11 lead on three straight points by Oshiro as she notched a kill and two aces.
But the Warriors did not go quietly as they went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 20 before a huge kill by Swenson helped Simpson regain the one-point lead.
Simpson found itself down 22-21 after two straight Red Hawk miscues to give Life Pacific its first lead of the third set
Back-to-back Warrior miscues allowed Simpson to pull ahead. Followed by a tandem block by Oshiro and Graham to set up a match-point advantage.
Mallory Swenson put the finishing touches as she slammed down the final kill to secure the straight-set win.

Tiara Manns led the team with eight kills each and combined for 11 digs and two blocks.
Mackenzie Tataryn and
Abigail Shackelford combined for 26 assists, four aces, and 12 digs.
Madison Kammuller had a huge game as she recorded a season-best 25 digs to go along with two aces.
Simpson looks to stay hot as they take on Occidental College on September 5th at 6 pm.
