Red Hawks drop final game of the Raider Invitational to the Bruins

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks volleyball squad concluded the Raider Invitational today as they fell to Bellevue University in straight sets.

Mariah Napoleon continued to have a good weekend as she picked up two kills to begin the game to give SU the early lead.

But the Bruins proved too much in the first set as they grabbed the commanding 22-9 lead.

A kill by Katie Graham and an attacking error by the Bruins rounded out the scoring for Simpson in the first set as they fell 25-9.

The Bruins came out firing in the second set as they grabbed the 11-3 lead.

Back-to-back kills by Tiara Manns and Kare Ann Oshiro helped keep Simpson in striking distance.

With the Red Hawks looking at a 15-6 deficit, they reeled off four straight points with a kill by Katie Graham to start the run and a kill by Napoleons to cap off the streak.

But a 7-1 Bruins run doomed the Red Hawks as they created separation and took the second set 25-15 to take the 2-0 match lead.

With their backs against the walls, the Red Hawks fought back in the third set and gave the Bruins all they could handle.

Simpson drew first blood in the third set by a kill by Graham. Another kill by Napoleon with the combination of Bruin errors helped SU grab the early 5-1 lead.

Both teams battled as they saw six different lead changes in the third set.

Simpson relinquished the lead for a short period before an ace by Sierra Murphy and kills by Kiahla Granger and Katie Graham helped Simpson retake the 11-9 lead.

But the Bruins took the one-point advantage halfway through the third set before the Red Hawks exploded for four straight points as they went on a 6-1 run.

During the run Tiara Manns recorded three kills and a kill by Mallory Swenson and an ace by Abigail Shackelford helped Simpson grab the 19-15 lead.

However, the Bruins flipped the script and went on a crucial 7-1 run to reclaim the 22-20 lead before a Red Hawks timeout.

With the match point on the line, a kill by Oshiro pulled Simpson within two points. But the Bruins finished things off as they took the third set 25-22.

Tiara Manns and Mariah Napoleon had the big swings as they combined for 13 kills and two blocks.

Katie Graham and Dani Rydjord had solid games up front as they combined for seven kills and four blocks.

The setter trio of Tataryn Mackenzie, Sierra Murphy, and Abigail Shackelford combined for 21 assists and four aces.

Madison Kammuller had a team-high nine digs to go along with three assists.

Simpson fought hard throughout the weekend as they look to bounce back against West Coast Baptist on August 22.
