REDDING, Calif. - The softball team resumed conference play against Westcliff today in a doubleheader to kick off a four-game series on senior weekend.
Game one featured an old-fashioned pitchers duel between these two teams' aces. Senior
Kylee Potes and Westcliff starter fired four innings of shutout softball.
The Warriors scratched across the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning.
A diving catch in right-center field by Kayle Vaillette helped put a stop to the Warrior's rally in the fifth inning.
But the Red Hawks answered back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs to take the 2-1 lead.
A leadoff single by
Marissa Ramirez followed by a sacrifice bunt by Vaillette put an early runner in scoring position.
A clutch two-trike triple by
Amy LeGrande plated Simpson's first run of the game.
With just one out the Red Hawks pushed across the difference maker on a single by
Ariel Schulzkump.
The Warriors had the tying run aboard in scoring position but another huge defensive play saved the Red Hawks as right fielder
Amy LeGrande made a diving catch towards the right field line.
Potes fired a clean seventh inning to preserve the complete game victory.
She surrendered one unearned run and scattered just three hits.
Simpson mustered seven hits and two runs.
Kimberlee Walston led the Red Hawks with a multi-hit performance while
Cailey Rizzardo added a 1-2 day with a walk.
Game 2:
Simpson looked for the sweep on the day behind freshman starter Jacequlyn Lujan.
Game two took a different toll to begin as the scoring started early and fast.
The Warriors drew first blood in game two after a leadoff single came around to score on a double.
But the Red Hawks countered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game.
A leadoff double by
Amy LeGrande moved up 60 feet on a sacrifice bunt by
Ariel Schulzkump.
Nicolena Holen put Simpson on the board with an RBI double down the right-field line.
The Warriors grabbed the 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Red Hawks threatened in the fourth and fifth innings but could not push across the tying run.
Westcliff added an insurance run in the top of the sixth inning as a lead-off walk came around to score.
Lujan limited the damage and escaped runners on second and third jam by inducing a groundball and a strikeout to end the threat.
Simpson threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning as they put the tying run aboard and brought the winning run to the plate.
But a line drive by Rizzardo found the shortstops glove to put an end to the ball game.
Lujan took the tough loss as she tossed the complete game while giving up just three runs and punching out eight Warrior batters.
Simpson looks to take the series tomorrow on senior day as the first pitch is slated for 11 AM.
