Red Hawks Lose in Extras to Conclude Spring Break Trip

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - The softball team concluded its spring break road trip in Prescott, AZ today as they resumed conference play against Embry-Riddle.

A four-game series ended up being moved to a two-game set as the two teams battled the cold front that saw snow, hail, and rain.

Friday's scheduled doubleheader only made it to the fourth inning of the first game before its postponement until today.

The Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as they plated four runs capped off by an inside-the-park grand slam.

Embry-Riddle padded its lead as they plated two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it a 6-0 ERAU lead.

The Simpson bats could not get it going as they mustered one hit by designated player Madyson Welch in the sixth inning.

Jessica Ulshoeffer came in relief of starter Kylee Potes in the sixth inning but gave up the game-ending runs to put the mercy rule in effect, 8-0.

Game 2:

Simpson looked to bounce back in game two of the twin-bill behind freshman starter Jaceqlyn Lujan as they grabbed the early 2-0 lead to begin the game.

The Red Hawks and Eagles provided an extra-inning thriller that saw seven different lead changes.

A leadoff walk to Amy LeGrande set the stage for a two-run bomb by Madyson Welch. This marked the first career homer of her young career.

But the Eagles answered back as they plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning to grab the 3-2 lead.

Simpson regained the lead in the top of the third inning as they plated three runs on three hits and one Eagle error to take the 5-3 lead.

A lead-off single by Cailey Rizzardo followed by an Eagle error and a walk to Kayley Vaillette loaded the bases with just one out.

LeGrande sharply singled into centerfield to score Rizzardo from third base followed by a two-run single by catcher Ariel Schulzkump that scored Vaillette and Delaney.

Lujan fell into some trouble in the bottom of the third inning as the Eagles reclaimed the lead on back-to-back home runs.

The Red Hawks offense put up another crooked number in the top of the fifth inning to grab the lead.

A lead-off single by Nicolena Holen followed by a single by Kimberle Walston set up a three-run blast by Cailey Rizzardo to give Simpson the 8-6 lead.

But the Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning as they plated two runs to tie the game 8-8.

Lujan settled in as she fired two straight scoreless frames as the game went into the ninth inning.

But the Eagles ended the game with a walk-off single to win 9-8 in nine innings.

Lijan suffered the loss but threw admirably as she tossed 8.1 innings of work.

The Simpson bats pounded out eight runs off nine hits.

Madyson Welch, Nicolena Holen, and Cailey Rizzardo each picked up two hit performances while Welch and Rizzardo provided the pop.

Welch and Rizzardo each homered and combined for five runs batted in.

LeGrande, Schulzkump, and Walston rounded out the Simpson offense with single-hit games.

With the loss, Simpson is 3-3 in conference play as they are in sole possession of fourth place in the Cal Pac standings.
