Simpson wins on the road against the Pioneers

ANGWIN, Calif. - The women's volleyball team hit the road and took down Pacific Union tonight in straight sets to improve to 10-4 in conference play.

The Pioneers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead before a kill by Tiara Manns and an ace by Mackenzie Tataryn tied the game at two.

The Red Hawks and Pioneers went back and forth in a closely played first set that saw six lead changes.

Simpson took the late 23-20 lead on a kill by Katie Graham. But the Pioneers scored three straight points to tie the game and force a Simpson timeout.

Back-to-back points by the Red Hawks capped off by a kill by Mariah Napoleon gave Simpson the 25-23 first-set victory.

Simpson jumped on the board first in set two with kills by Mallory Swenson and Manns.

The second set proved to be even more thrilling than the first set as it went beyond the standard 25-point mark.

The Pioneers held a 19-18 lead before Simpson scored three straight points on a kill by Graham, Manns, and an ace by Mackenzie.

With the set tied at 24, Simpson closed the door as a kill by Napoleon put Simpson into set point territory and a final swing by Swenson ended the 26-24 second set thriller.

Simpson looked to take the match in straight sets as they jumped out to the early 6-1 lead on two kills by Graham, a kill from Manns, and an ace by Mackenzie.

But the Pioneers fought back as they tied the game at nine as they went on an 8-3 run.

The Red Hawks answered back as they took the commanding 16-11 lead on a 7-2 run.

A solo block by Dani Rydjord sparked the run as Swenson and Manns added kills while Kiahla Granger posted an ace.

The Pioneers pulled within one but the Red Hawks busted out five unanswered points to take the 21-15 lead.

The final kill of the night belonged to Graham as Simpson took down the Pioneers 25-18 for the straight-set victory.

Tiara Manns, Mariah Napoleon, and Katie Graham combined for 31 kills, four blocks, and 17 digs.

Abigail Shackelford had a team-high 17 assists to go along with five digs.

Mackenzie Tataryn followed close behind with 14 digs to go along with a team-high three aces.
