REDDING, Calif. - The men's squad hosted #18 in the nation, Oregon Tech tonight in a nonconference matchup.
Simpson drew first blood and jumped out to the early lead on back-to-back three-pointers by
Timothy Parker and
Drey Ubas.
The Red Hawks and Hustlin Owls duked it out in the first half that saw five different lead changes.
Sophomore
Kellen Torrey came up big for the Red Hawks as he nailed his third three-pointer in the first half to give Simpson the 23-20 advantage.
Torrey went on a tear as he scored 15 out of the Red Hawk's 17 points to give Simpson the 26-20 lead with just over eight minutes left in the first half.
Senior forward,
Derek Gorden notched a three-pointer while converting on back-to-back free throws to extend Simpson's largest lead in the first half to eight, 31-23.
The Owls chipped away and pulled within one point as Parker drilled a mid-range jumper to end the first half and give Simpson the 35-34 lead.
Torrey had a team-high 15 points off the bench as he shot an astounding 80% from the floor.
The Red Hawks regained its seven-point lead to open the half on buckets from Parker, Gorden, and
Jace Mills.
Simpson fended off Oregon Tech for much of the second half until the Owls took its first lead with just over ten minutes remaining.
The Red Hawks looked to mount a comeback as a three-pointer by Ubas followed by a timeout pulled Simpson back within ten with just over two minutes to play.
But the Owls never looked back as they never relinquished the lead as they went on a 25-13 run to take the midweek matchup, 83-70.
Kellen Torrey had a team-high 16 points followed by double-digit performances by
Derek Gorden,
Drey Ubas,
Timothy Parker, and
Jace Mills.
Gorden and Ubas each notched 11 points while combining for eight rebounds and five steals.
Parker and Mills followed close behind as they each picked up 10 points while combining for seven rebounds.
Simpson looks to bounce back as they take on Pacific Union next week on Tuesday, December 3rd at 7 pm.
