PORTLAND, Ore. - The men's basketball squad tipped off tonight in Portland, OR as they took on Multnomah University.
The first points of the year came from senior
Derek Gorden, as he drilled a three-pointer to get Simpson on the board.Â
A layup by
Jace Mills followed by a three-ball from
Drey Ubas cut into the Mulntomah 13-8 lead.Â
The Red Hawks pulled within three, 30-27 midway through the first half as Ubas converted on two free throws.
DaMari Tate converted on two free throws to close out the scoring for the Red Hawks in the first half as the Lions went on a 23-8 run to close out the first half to take the 53-35 lead.Â
Ubas had a team-high 12 points in the first half as he was a perfect 6-6 from the line and 2-3 from downtown.Â
The Red Hawks looked to trim away as Tate drained a three-pointer to begin the second half.Â
Simpson went on an 11-4 run as
Mack Tarver Jr. converted on a layup to pull Simpson within eight, 57-49.Â
The Lions added some insurance points and rebuilt its lead to 16 until the Red Hawks nailed back-to-back three-pointers midway through the second half by Ubas and
Sam Shields to pull Simpson within seven, 67-60.Â
However, the Lions prevailed and held off the Red Hawks for the 91-77 victory.Â
Simpson had a solid second half as they outscored Multnomah 42-38 with Tarver Jr. leading the way with 15 points and a perfect 7-7 from the floor.Â
Drey Ubas had a team-high 20 points on four three points as he shot 55% from the floor.Â
Mack Tarver Jr. had himself a solid Simpson debut as he followed close behind with 19 points as he shot 73% from the floor.Â
Kellen Torrey had a solid game off the bench as he posted 12 points to go along with three assists.Â
Simpson looks to bounce back tomorrow as they take on Portland Bible College at 2 pm.Â
