REDDING, Calif. - The women's basketball squad kicked off the season at home this afternoon as they took on Lincoln University.
Junior guard
Anna Marshall notched the first points of the year as she hit a mid-range jumper.
Facing a one-point deficit, the Red Hawks closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run to take the 21-15 lead after one-quarter of play.
Senior
Natalie Brown drilled a three-pointer to give Simpson the two-point advantage. Followed by back-to-back free throws by
Nikki Thompson and a layup by
Zara Dumatol.
A three-pointer by Brown to open the second quarter extended Simpson's lead to nine.
But Lincoln had the edge in the second quarter as they outscored Simpson 17-9.
Cerina Nguyen closed out the scoring in the first half for Simpson as she converted on a layup to pull the Red Hawks within two, 32-30.
Marshall got the scoring going in the second half as Simpson pulled within three, 35-32.
The Red Hawks went on to double up Lincoln 22-11 in the third quarter to take the 52-43 lead.
The Simpson offense closed out the game with a strong fourth quarter as they put up a game-high 25 points.
Marshall and Nguyen had a big fourth quarter as they each picked up seven points.
Anna Marshall finished with a solid game as she had 18 points to go along with nine rebounds and three assists.
Cerina Nguyen shared a team-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds and five blocks.
Natalie Brown followed close behind with 15 points as she had a team-high four three points and 11 rebounds.
Nikki Thompson rounded out Simpson's double-digit scorers with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Simpson hits the road to take on Cal Poly Humboldt this Tuesday at 5:30 pm in an exhibition game.
