VALLEJO, Calif. - The women's basketball team defeated Cal State University Maritime on the road in Vallejo, CA 72-62 to push its win streak to three games.
Back-to-back three-pointers by
Tessa Kinney and
Gabby Sebit to open the game gave Simpson the early lead.
Sebit drilled her second three-pointer of the quarter to grow Simpson's largest lead of the game to six points.
But the Keelhaulers fought back by trimming the six-point deficit to two points after a three-ball.
Riley Wallen nailed a jumper to close out the quarter to extend Simpson's 18-14 lead.
Itzel Torres put the first points on the board for the Red Hawks in the second quarter on a fast break layup off a steal.
Rachel Gafford scored her second basket of the night on a jumper to give Simpson an eight-point lead with less than three minutes left to play before the half.
Wallen ended the first half scoring for Simpson by draining both of her free throws to give Simpson the 34-29 lead heading into the half.
Torres picked up her first three-ball of the game on the Red Hawk's opening possession to start the second half of play.
Followed by back-to-back buckets by
Dyani Del Castillo and another bucket by Torres padded Simpson's largest lead of the night to 12 points.
CSUM trimmed Simpson's lead down to as much as six points.
However, a three-pointer by Castillo to end the third quarter with Simpson up 58-46.
Natalie Brown's first points of the night came on a three-pointer to open the fourth and final quarter of play. Brown later hit her second three-ball of the game late in the fourth quarter.
The Red Hawks proved too lethal as they held off the Keelhauler's fourth-quarter push by defeating Maritime 72-62.
Dyani Del Castillo led the Red Hawks with a team-high 17 points to go along with five rebounds.
Rachel Gaffrod had a solid game with 12 points to go along with four assists.
Itzel Torres had 11 points and
Tessa Kinney had 10 points respectively to round out the double-digit performances.
With the win, Simpson keeps pace as they remain in sole possession of fourth place while remaining two games back from the top spot.
Simpson will return home to take on Pacific Union this Saturday at 6:30 PM.
