Box Score GILBERT, Ariz. - The women's volleyball team started its Arizona gauntlet off strong with a win over Cal Pac rival Park-Gilbert University.
The Red Hawks played a thrilling five-set match that resulted in the Red Hawks edging out the Buccaneers.
The Buccaneers struck first as they grabbed set one by the score of 25-19.
However, the Red Hawks answered back as they took sets two and three by the score of 25-23 and 25-17.
Simpson looked to close the door in set four but was denied by the Bucs as a key 6-0 run helped create enough separation.
The fifth set was a back-and-forth battle that swung momentum to both sides. But the Bucs were unable to stop the compounding Red Hawk rallies as they won 15-12.
Mallory Swenson had a big game as she had a team-high 18 kills to go along with a hitting percentage of .318 on the night.
Following close behind were
Tiana Nihipali and
Tiara Manns who accounted for 28 of the team's 60 kills.
Senior setter Kayala Somonatan had another solid game as she recorded 53 assists and 17 digs.
This was a big game for Simpson as they gained ground and created separation from Park in the Cal Pac standings.
Simpson will be back in action tomorrow to play Benedictine-Mesa
