REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University men's soccer team fell to Westcliff University Sunday afternoon, 4-3.
The Warriors were able to hold off the fierce Red Hawk comeback to move half a game over Simpson in the Cal Pac standings.
Simpson got on the board first in the 26th minute as
Michel Hampe put away a header on a free kick by
Alvaro Zarpellon.
Simpson opened the second half with a 1-0 lead after a grueling and chippy first half against the Warriors.
However, the Warriors struck lighting in a bottle as they scored twice within the first two minutes of the second half to grab a 2-1 lead.
Westcliff added two more insurance goals in the 63rd and 65th minute to hold a commanding 4-1 lead.
But the Red Hawks answered back when a key foul in the box allowed for a penalty kick by Jaime Velasco.
Velasco was able to convert the penalty kick to cut the score in half to 2-4 as he beat the Warrior goalkeeper.
Simpson was aided again by a key foul in the box to allow Hampe a penalty kick opportunity.
Hampe converted the kick to complete the brace and move Simpson within one. But with only a few ticks left the Warriors were able to close out the game.
The Red Hawks will hit the road to take on Park Gilbert University this Friday at 8 PM in Arizona.
