MESA, AZ - Simpson U men's basketball was knocked out of the quarterfinal of the Cal Pac Championships tonight after suffering a 71-57 loss to Westcliff.
The Red Hawks came into the game as the sixth seed and were underdogs to the third seed Westcliff.
Simpson battled in both halves as they have all season. The 2022-23 season at times was an uphill battle for the Red Hawks, but they found a way many times to pull off key results.
Tonight, Westcliff was just too strong. 25 bench points from the Warriors was the key to their victory.
The Red Hawks again were playing with a short bench and ran out of gas in the second half. SU had clawed to keep the game close and even cut the WU lead to four with 10 minutes to go.
Westcliff was fortunate to get significant performances from the bench led by Micaiah Hankins, who scored 15 points off the bench and lightened the pressure for the Warriors starters.
Simpson was led in scoring by
Javonntie Jackson, who recorded 17 points and six rebounds for the Red Hawks. The Cal Pac single-game rebound record holder,
Daylon Potts was a monster on the glass again pulling down a game-high 17 boards.
Akin Branco,
Drey Ubas, and
Morgan Cox all scored in double figures for SU. Despite Simpson's off-shooting night from beyond the arc, they remained in the game for all 40 minutes.
With the loss, Simpson's season comes to an end. However, with all the team had to battle this year, getting to this point was a massive victory.
The Red Hawks season had many memorable memories, from
Kevin Robello's game-winners to
Daylon Potts' record-breaking performance.
SU will regroup and begin building for next season with lots of positive takeaways from the 2022-23 season.
