ASHLAND, Or. - The women's basketball team opened its Veterans Day weekend in the Southern Oregon Classic in Ashland Oregon where they played Oregon Tech tonight.
It was all Owls in the first half as they held a commanding 38-22 lead.
OIT jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but a three-pointer by
Dyani Del Castillo pulled Simpson within one. The first quarter saw the Owls outscore Simpson 22-10.
The Red Hawks opened the second quarter on a 5-1 run that was highlighted by
Rachel Gafford's three-pointer that pulled Simpson within eight points.
Going into the half Gafford led the Red Hawks with six points to go along with one assist and
Rory Hetrick led the team with six boards for the first half.
The Owls came into the second half with a 16-point lead. The Red Hawks played catch-up as Simpson faced a 56-40 deficit at the end of three quarters.
However, the Red Hawk offense battled back as they found themselves down by as much as 23 points.
But a 12-5 Red Hawk run aided by seven points by Sophomore
Anna Marshall pulled Simpson back within 16 points.
It was too much Owls as OIT went on to close out the game by a final score of 77-51.
Gafford led the Red Hawks offense with eight points on the night to go along with three assists.
Hetrick had a solid game with a team-leading 12 rebounds and six points.
Simpson will look to bounce back as they take on Southern Oregon tomorrow night at 6:30 PM.
