Red Hawks Lose Opening Round in Double Overtime

PRESCOTT, Ariz. - The men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker this afternoon against Embry-Riddle 4-3.

The Red Hawks entered the day as the sixth seed and looked to upset third seed Embry-Riddle.

Simpson held total control for the first 75 minutes of play as they held a commanding 2-0 lead.

Jaime Velasco scored the first goal of the day in the 42nd minute of play to give Simpson a 1-0 advantage.

However, the score remained 1-0 until the 76th minute when David Vasquez added a much-needed insurance goal to make the score 2-0.

But with less than fifteen minutes left the Eagles made a fierce comeback to tie the game with two swift goals in the 78th and 83rd minute.

The full-time was not enough to settle the score between these two teams as overtime was needed.

Simpson retook the lead in the 99th minute of play as Jaime Velasco scored his second goal of the game with the help of Cristhian Guevara

But the Eagles answered back in the second overtime when they scored twice to grab and hold onto the 4-3 lead.

With the loss, Simpson will say farewell to Mohammad Salaymeh, Alvarao Zarpellon, Franklin Benitez, Christian Meza, Jesus Rodriguez, and Jaime Velasco.

Coach Gary Weaver's first year saw his team earn a playoff spot and finish with a 5-4-3 record in conference play.

Simpson will look to have a strong offseason as they hope to make a deep playoff run next season.
