MESA, Ariz. - Simpson University men's basketball second road game of the three-game road trip ended in an exciting fashion with a game-sealing bucket from
Kevin Robello with 27 seconds left in overtime.
With the win, SU completes the sweep of BenU in the season series with some late-game heroics from Robello who once again knocked down a key jumper to help the Red Hawks clinch the victory in a vital road conference game. Against Benedictine, Simpson went into the halftime break down 10 points and fell behind by as much as 16. Even on the second night of a back-to-back the Red Hawks rallied showing incredible perseverance with one clutch basket after another in the second half.
"This was without question our biggest win of the year," Head Coach
Todd Franklin exclaimed, "I am so proud of these kids who played hard on back-to-back nights and never gave up, continuing to battle and reach deep from within playing 45 minutes with just seven players."
Drey Ubas was the catalyst for the Red Hawks in the victory playing every second of the 45-minute game and putting up a season-high 30 points alongside four assists and four rebounds. Ubas was also incredibly efficient shooting the ball finishing 10-15 from the floor, 4-8 from beyond the arc, and 6-6 from the free throw line.
"This is probably the best I've seen Drey play this year," Franklin said, "45 minutes, one turnover, with 30 points is an incredible feat."
Ubas also assisted
Kevin Robello on what ended up being the game-winning jumper in overtime. Robello had another big night for SU tallying 25 points, knocking down six three-pointers, and once again showing that he has ice in his veins with multiple clutch baskets.
Even with those standout performances, every Red Hawk played a major part in the crucial road win.
Javonntie Jackson finished with 17 points and five boards and
Daylon Potts was a monster on the glass with 14 rebounds to go along with ten points in a double-double performance.
The Red Hawks' second-half shooting percentage jumped from 35 percent all the way to 63 percent in the comeback win and they hope to ride that hot streak into another pivotal road game against Park University. Simpson will look to continue the climb up the Cal Pac standings currently 6th, but just a game out of the 4th spot.
Simpson will face Park on Sunday, January 29th at 7:30 PM in Gilbert, Ariz.
