REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University women's basketball improves to 2-0 in conference play after a come-from-behind victory over Park-Gilbert 63-55.
The Red Hawks, fueled by a 19-10 run in the fourth quarter, knocked down key shots down the stretch to protect home court in game two in the Cal Pac.
SU was impressive on the defensive end, ramping up the intensity as the game wore on forcing 16 Buccaneer turnovers and holding Park to 37 percent from the floor. Head Coach Edgar Mendez was excited about the Red Hawks' ability to make adjustments quickly.
"I think we were able to adjust to it (halftime changes) on the fly, so that is always good when you can change something in the middle of the game and they can do it well," Coach Mendez said. "Defensively, we still need to do better rebounding. We are getting stops, but we are giving up offensive rebounds."
Park tracked down 12 offensive rebounds compared to just eight for Simpson.
Livi Lindsey led SU in scoring with 19 points including 8-8 from the free throw line, where Simpson was a perfect 13-13.
"We talked about coming out in the third quarter with a strong attitude," Lindsey says, "This gives us a confidence booster and a little bit of morale to finish off the weekend strong."
Celina Tress provided vital 13 points on an efficient 6-11 shooting from the floor.
With the win, the Red Hawks improve to 2-0 in conference play, but still have two-thirds of the Arizona trio remaining this week and don't have much time to celebrate as they take on Benedictine-Mesa tomorrow night at 5:30 PM in the Grant Center.
