REDDING, Calif. - Simpson women's soccer fell in its home opener Monday afternoon to Bushnell University, 2-1.
The match was the finale of Simpson University's New Student Orientation and was the first Simpson home sporting event of the year.
Bushnell scored the opening goal in the 25th minute off of a shot that was deflected in by a Simpson player resulting in an own goal.
The Red Hawks equalized just before halftime as
Emma Nichols found the net for the first time this season;
Alyssa Trevino recorded the assist.
The Beacons scored the difference-making goal in the 55th minute and then held off the Simpson attack for the remainder of the match.
SU outshot Bushnell 17-13 for the match, but the Beacons had the advantage in shots on goal at 8-6.
Simpson keeper,
Kiah Gridley recorded six saves in the match and
Carolina Oropeza put two shots on goal but was unable to get on the score sheet.
The Red Hawks return to action Friday, September 10th when they face Mills College on the road in Oakland. Kickoff is set for 4 PM.
