Simpson softball swept a pair of games Sunday at home, including a 2-0 win over the No. 1 ranked team in the country and defending NAIA national champions, Southern Oregon. The Red Hawks opened the day with a 1-0 walkoff win over NCAA Div. II foe, Holy Names. On Saturday, the Red Hawks fell to both HNU and SOU on the opening weekend of softball action this season.
Game 1 - Southern Oregon 6, Simpson 1
The Red Hawks opened the season with as tough an opponent possible, the defending national champions and top-ranked Southern Oregon Raiders. A tight game and pitchers' duel throughout, the Raiders scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach.
Sydney Moorhead took the loss in the circle.
Mia Olvera and
Ashley Oakley each recorded two hits, and
Emily Fuller's solo home run accounted for the only Simpson score.
Game 2 - Holy Names 3, Simpson 1
The Red Hawks squandered opportunities on offense, including a bases loaded inning with no outs, but could only scratch across a single run in support of
Sunshine Wehunt's pitching performance.
Courtney Clevenger had two of the seven base hits for the Red Hawks.
Jodi Garner recorded the only RBI for SU. Holy Names scored three times in the fourth inning to take the lead and held on for the win.
Game 3 - Simpson 1, Holy Names 0
Sydney Moorhead tossed a three-hit shutout, and
Ashley Oakley drove in the only run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning for the first win of the season. Oakley led the offense with two hits.
Game 4 - Simpson 2, Southern Oregon 0
Simpson recorded a victory over a top-ranked opponent for the fourth time in school history with the shutout win over the Raiders.
Sunshine Wehunt struck out eight and allowed just five hits in holding the Raiders scoreless for the first time in 95 games (Mar. 30, 2018 vs. Corban).
Emily Fuller gave the Red Hawks the lead with an RBI single in the fourth inning, and
Alexis Zamora's RBI double added an insurance run in the sixth.
Simpson's previous wins over a top-ranked opponent all came against Concordia-Irvine, twice in the 2014 NAIA National Tournament when the Red Hawks swept a pair of games at CUI to advance to the NAIA World Series, and once during the 2013 regular season.
