Red Hawks Take Three of Four Against Holy Names and Oregon Tech

REDDING, Calif. – The Red Hawks were able to take three of four games in the second weekend of non-conference action. SU swept both games on Friday, defeating both OIT and HNU, and then split the pair on Friday, defeating OIT and falling to HNU.

Game One – Simpson 10, Oregon Tech 8
The Red Hawks started the first game strong, taking a 3-0 lead after the first inning. Austen Salcedo, Nathan Minami, and McKinnon Bennett accounted for the runs in the bottom of the first. OIT added a run of their own in the third but SU responded with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Red Hawks batted home Logan Gomes, James Turnbull, Josh Dilg, and Salcedo. The Red Hawks withstood OIT's 5 run comeback attempt in the top of the sixth and would go on to win the game 10 runs to eight. Sophomore Gabriel Rojas got the W on the mound for SU.

Game Two – Simpson 4, Holy Names 1
SU took advantage of HNU errors in the fourth inning, adding four runs in a game where scoring was hard to come by. Sam Nakata got hit by pitch then stole a base, putting him in prime position for back-to-back base hits from Gomes and Turnbull. Dilg reached 1st on an error and the Red Hawks were able to bat in four runs to take the lead and not look back. SU defeated HNU four to one with Damien Awai getting the W for over 7 innings of work.

Game Three – Simpson 2, Oregon Tech 1
Collin Bovee got the win on the mound for the Red Hawks in a game where SU pulled off some heroics to take the game 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth. Andre Alvarez and Gomes were the game winning runs for SU and Jerry Zurita had the RBI in the ninth in his only at bat of the game.

Game Four – Holy Names 8, Simpson 2
Simpson was unable to keep the weekend magic alive as HNU got a hot start in the final game of the weekend. SU found themselves trailing by seven runs heading into the fourth. The Red Hawks were able to get one run back in the fourth and the eighth with Nakata and Salcedo accounting for the runs. SU would send eight different pitchers to the mound to attempt to slow down the Hawks hitters, but Simpson ultimately fell to the Hawks of HNU eight to two.

The Red Hawks next action will take them to San Francisco for four games against SF State on February 7th, 8th, and 9th.
