COMPTON, Calif. -- Both teams won a game, and Mother Nature took the third in the opening Cal Pac Conference baseball series of the season over the weekend. Simpson and Marymount split a doubleheader on Friday, and Saturday's game was rained out as league play opened.
Game 1 - Marymount 12, Simpson 2 (7 inn)
The host Mariners recorded six extra-base hits and had six players with at least two hits in the opener. Taylor Jordan and
Christopher Brue each drove in runs for the Red Hawks, and
Andre Alvarez recorded two hits, including a double.
Damien Awai suffered the loss on the mound.
Game 2 - Simpson 10, Marymount 6
Simpson bounced back in the nightcap to earn the doubleheader split. Trailing by 3 runs in the 5th, the Red Hawks rallied to tie and then took the lead for good with 3 more runs in the sixth.
Josh Dilg plated two runs with a double to left field that gave Simpson a lead it would not relinquish. Dilg later scored on an Alvarez single.
Daniel Farfan drove in an insurance run in the 8th with an RBI double.
Collin Bovee was stellar in five innings of relief to earn the victory on the mound.
