The Simpson baseball team spent opening weekend battling Mother Nature and both Menlo and Oregon Tech in four games that included rescheduling struggles and eventually two road games for the Red Hawks.
Game One (Menlo 12, Simpson 9) -- Simpson scored five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to open an 8-5 lead, but could not hold off a Menlo rally that included seven runs in the final two innings.
Jordan Taylor and
Nathan Minami each collected three hits for the game. Taylor homered and drove in a pair of runs. Buddy Cervantes took the loss on the mound.
Game Two (Oregon Tech 12, Simpson 9) -- For the second time in as many games, the Red Hawks held a late lead but could not hold it. Simpson posted seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 9-2 lead. That lead didn't last long as the Owls rallied for nine tallies in the sixth. Taylor remained hot at the plate with two hits and three RBI.
Paul Gallegos suffered the loss.
Game Three (Menlo 22, Simpson 4) -- With weather conditions in Redding too wet for play, the Red Hawks traveled to Menlo to face the Oaks in a doubleheader.
Joshua Hernandez led the offense with two hits, including an RBI double.
Andrew Cisneros allowed five earned runs in his first pitching start of the season and took the loss.
Game Four (Menlo 7, Simpson 5) -- Simpson batters hammered four home runs, and the Red Hawks rallied, but came up short after trailing 6-1 after three innings.
Logan Gomes knocked a two-run homer, and the game included solo home runs for
Josh Dilg,
Christopher Brue, and
Sahid Abdalah. Angel Ruiz, Jr. took the loss on the mound.
