REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's soccer took down Walla Walla University, 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.
The Red Hawks have now knocked off two Cascade Conference opponents, which is one of the best conferences on the West Coast. Walla Walla came into today's match, 2-0, with both wins over Cal Pac foes, Cal Maritime and Pacific Union College.
Despite a scoreless first 45 minutes of action, the second half provided more aggressive attacks as SU took a 2-0 lead quickly. SU striker, Alexis Rodriguez scored both goals for Simpson, giving him five goals in four matches for the Red Hawks. He is off to one of the best starts for a Simpson forward in program history and is tied for 1st in the NAIA in total goals.
After Walla Walla cut the lead in half with a headed goal, the Red Hawks continued to find the net. Simpson midfielder,
Alfred Kander was making key plays all over the field before finally tallying a goal on rip from just inside the box to extend Simpson's lead to 3-1. Just over two minutes later,
Joel Sterling scored his first goal of the season off a cross from Victor Afonso, to give SU the 4-1 advantage heading into the final whistle.
Simpson men's soccer improves to 2-2 on the young season and will head on the road for a pair of tough matches facing William Jessup and Stanislaus State before coming back home to take on Humboldt State on September 22nd.
