REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University Red Hawks recorded two key victories this weekend, beating Providence Christian College, 11-2, 7-2. Simpson and Providence were unable to get the third game in due to rain and will be made up later in the season if there is playoff implications.
With the two wins, the Red Hawks improve to 10-10 in conference (the best start in program history) and have now won five consecutive games.
Cody Coggins continued his hot streak on the mound in game one, throwing six innings not allowing any Sea Beggars runs and fanning nine batters. The Red Hawks went yard three times in game one, as
Damien Chavez,
Christopher Brue, and
Jordan Taylor all had round-trippers. Chavez, Brue, and Taylor all tallied three RBIs in the game one victory as well.
Game two provided more of the same for Simpson. Another good pitching performance by
Andrew Cisneros and Vincent (Buddy) Cervantes. Cisneros recorded the win, and Cervantes tallied the four inning save.
Damien Chavez brought in two more runs for the Red Hawks in game two and Nate Minami went 2-5 with a couple of RBIs as well.
The race for a playoff spot in the Cal Pac and Cascade Championship tournament is heating up as Simpson has closed the gap on Marymount to a one game lead for the 3rd playoff spot.
