Game Recap: Softball |

Simpson Softball Takes Two from BenU

MESA, ARIZ– The Red Hawks split the four game series with Benedictine Mesa, winning both games Saturday, 7-5 and 5-1. However Benedictine battled to take both games Sunday, 10-9 and 3-2.

Sydney Moorhead and Sunshine Wehunt tallied the two wins on day one as Moorhead threw in game one and Wehunt came in to get the save. Mia Olvera had a monstrous Saturday at the plate as she finished the day 5-7 with two homeruns and six RBIs helping propel SU to victories in both game one and two.

In game three, Benedictine quickly put up a five spot in the bottom of the first against Simpson starter, Chardae Hoskins and scored another four in the 3rd jumping out to a large lead that they wouldn't relinquish. SU nearly came back from being down 9-2, but the 7th inning rally fell just short. Courtney Clevenger was 4-4 at the plate with two RBIs and Mia Olvera again brought in three runs in on a 1-3 performance.

Game four was a low scoring affair and every at bat proved to be vital. Simpson scored first in the top of the 2nd inning as Alison Harvey scored on the Juliann Garcia single to put the Red Hawks up 1-0. BenU struck back in the 4th inning on a two-run homerun by Marisa Coleman to take a 2-1 lead. The Red Hawks would score the equalizer on a fielder's choice that brought Olvera across. Benedictine would prove to be clutch as Alexis Patino singled home the winning run and even the season series at 2-2.

Simpson will continue its spring break trip as they will have a non conference game March 26 against Arizona Christian University in a two game series.
