COMPTON, Calif. – The Red Hawks competed in a three game series with Marymount California University, dropping game one 7-1 and narrowly falling in games two and three 5-3, 5-4.
In game one, Marymount pitching staff took center stage, only allowing three hits and one run from Simpson while striking out 15 batter.
Reynaldo Gomez got the ball to start game two and pitched eight innings giving up four earned runs while also fanning five Mariner batters. After allowing a three spot in the bottom of the 1st, SU countered in the 2nd inning after
Michael Driscoll led off the inning with a triple and was brought home on a sacrifice fly. The Red Hawks wouldn't score again until the 7th inning where they would string together a few hits and a Marymount error to bring in two runs. Marymount shut Simpson down in the 8th and 9th innings in the 5-3 win.
The Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after some tricky baserunning brought in
Creed Smith for the second run of the inning. SU scored again in the 5th inning on a
Austin Ruffner solo homerun and then again in the 6th as Smith scored again to give Simpson the 4-3 lead. Marymount remained hot with some clutch hitting after a solo homerun and then a Red Hawk error that proved costly eventually giving up the go-ahead run.
The Red Hawks fall to 4-8 in conference play but look to bounce back to put them back into a playoff spot as they take on La Sierra for a six game series after the home series was rained out. Simpson will be the home team for three and La Sierra will be home team for the other three.
